From Hawaii to Florida, here are the 7 most dangerous highways in the United States

For many drivers, navigating long highways can be relaxing and seem adventurous; however, in the United States, there are some roads that are quite the opposite. The United States has a high road mortality rate, reflecting not only drivers’ behavior but also how dangerous some of these roads can be. From Hawaii to Florida, here are the 7 most dangerous highways in the United States.

The most dangerous highways in the United States

Highway 1, Florida

Florida’s Highway 1 was classified as the most dangerous in the United States in 2017. This highway, the longest north-south route in the country, spans the east coast of Florida over 877 km and 13 counties. It has the highest number of fatal accidents, with fatalities increasing during the summer months when traffic volume rises.

I-15, Nevada

Millions of people drive annually from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, but this 290 km stretch has seen more deaths than any other in both states. Truck drivers and AAA cite distractions from scenery and alcohol consumption as contributing factors. Between 1995 and 2010, 1,069 deaths were recorded on this highway.

Highway 2, Montana

Known as one of the most dangerous highways in the United States due to its high number of fatalities, Montana is recognized as one of the most dangerous states for rural driving due to long distances, with emergency response times of up to 80 minutes, which contributes to the severity of accidents. Sparse traffic leads to higher speeds and a greater propensity for losing control of vehicles.

I-10, Arizona

The 241 km stretch between Phoenix and the California border is particularly perilous. The highway crosses the desert and experiences heavy traffic. Fatigue has been a major factor causing drivers to veer into oncoming traffic or off the road. Mountainous terrain and sharp curves further amplify its dangerous reputation, demanding heightened attention while driving.

Kahekili Highway, Hawaii

Also known as State Highway 340, it’s one of Maui’s most dangerous roads. The highway winds between rocks on one side and steep cliffs on the other. Despite traffic flowing in both directions and being generally well-maintained, much of it is single-lane with passing areas that can be hazardous. Due to high speeds, many motorists have suffered fatal accidents.

Highway 160, Colorado

Located in the San Juan Mountains and ascending to Wolf’s Creek Pass at 10,000 feet, this highway features tight curves and steep switchbacks. In winter, ice and snow make driving challenging, affecting truckers who avoid Colorado during this season.

I-285, Atlanta

I-285 around Atlanta, known as “The Perimeter,” forms a 101 km loop encircling the city, connecting numerous highways and interstates entering Atlanta, including a complex interchange with I-85 northeast of the city. The road is filled with merges, sharp curves, and large trucks, making it extremely hazardous. Heavy traffic only increases the danger, requiring drivers to be extremely cautious when navigating this highway.
