Kratos Completes Autonomous Truck Convoy for NASCAR

Technology company Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc., which serves the defense, national security, and global markets sectors, successfully conducted an autonomous truck convoy operation with trailers across the United States. The achievement was carried out in support of the NASCAR Anduril 250 race, transporting essential race equipment from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Naval Base Coronado.

The deployment was made in collaboration with Champion Tire & Wheel, a leading motorsports logistics provider that supports NASCAR operations, according to Kratos. The company stated that the deployment once again demonstrated Kratos’ dual-use innovation strategy of adapting defense-proven autonomy for commercial implementation.

NASCAR Embraces Autonomous Truck Convoy System

Kratos’ autonomous truck convoy system combines a human-driven lead tractor-trailer with an autonomous follower tractor-trailer supervised by an onboard safety attendant. Through synchronized steering, braking, and speed control, the follower vehicle traveled as part of a freight transport operation across multiple states while maintaining safety and operational oversight. Using GPS, onboard sensors, and advanced vehicle controls, the operation was conducted under dynamic road and environmental conditions.

“Last year validated the concept. This year demonstrated scalable execution,” said Maynard Factor, Vice President of Business Development at Kratos. “Our autonomous tractor-trailer successfully completed a cross-country logistics transport, demonstrating how convoy technology can safely improve efficiency, expand freight capacity, and help address the current driver shortage.”

The collaboration between Kratos and NASCAR aims to demonstrate that autonomous freight transportation has evolved from controlled pilot programs into revenue-generating commercial logistics operations. Through autonomous “leader-follower” platooning formations, the technology provides a practical pathway to increase freight capacity, improve operational efficiency, and expand the use of autonomy in both commercial transportation and defense logistics applications, according to the technology company.

At the Center of One of America’s Largest Events

Partnering with the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series placed the companies at the center of one of the largest sporting events in the United States. Consisting of 36 races and concluding on November 8, the 2026 season marks the 78th season of the NASCAR Cup Series.

The schedule includes 32 oval-track races, three road-course races, one street-course race, and three non-championship events. The season began with the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium and the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway and will conclude with the championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Notable changes include a street-course race at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, the relocation of the All-Star Race to Dover, and the return of points-paying races to Chicagoland Speedway and North Wilkesboro Speedway for the first time in decades.
