The year 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, and the country is preparing for celebrations that promise to make it a memorable occasion. In the transportation industry, these plans have already begun to take shape with the introduction of commemorative locomotives painted in red, white, and blue to represent the American flag.
In early April, testing began for the “American Freedom Train” No. 250, led by the American Steam Railroad Preservation Association (ASR). Although the locomotive was conceived to commemorate this important anniversary, the planned nationwide tour had to be canceled due to various issues, including the lack of operating agreements with railroad companies and the absence of corporate sponsors.
However, the celebration plans continue. The funds raised for the project will now be used for the restoration of Reading Company T-1 class 4-8-4 locomotive No. 2100, which will be presented with a special paint scheme as the “American Freedom Train No. 250” during the festivities.
This will not be the only commemorative project: Union Pacific and Metro-North have also announced initiatives to introduce special locomotives in honor of this historic date.

Celebrating 250 years of independence on rails: commemorative anniversary locomotives
Union Pacific Railroad (UPR) is one of the most well-known railroad companies in the United States. Founded in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln, it carries a significant part of the nation’s history, and is now part of the plans to celebrate the anniversary of American independence.
UPR has decided to celebrate with two new locomotives, as well as the first tour of the “Big Boy,” the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. It will travel to Philadelphia on July 4, with planned stops in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania.
The eight main public events on the Big Boy tour will be:
- May 30 – Omaha, Nebraska (Union Pacific headquarters)
- June 3 – West Chicago, Illinois
- June 10 – Buffalo, New York
- June 15–16 – Scranton, Pennsylvania
- July 4–5 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- July 9–10 – Altoona, Pennsylvania
- July 14 – Fostoria, Ohio
- July 19 – St. Louis, Missouri
In addition, they will celebrate the “origin of the nation” with locomotive No. 1776 – America250, which will feature a waving American flag over the background of a traditional armor-yellow Union Pacific locomotive, along with the America250 logo. Tribute will be paid to President Lincoln with locomotive No. 1616, painted in the characteristic colors of his era.
A third and more recent commemorative UPR locomotive, No. 4547, was built in collaboration with Wabtec and pays tribute to the current president, Donald J. Trump. It is the third in a series of presidential locomotives, which also includes No. 4141, honoring George H. W. Bush.
Joining the celebrations, Metro-North Railroad unveiled its “America 250” locomotive on April 30 via social media, renumbering one of its P32AC-DM units to No. 250 and decorating it with a patriotic color scheme.

This unit is the ninth in a series of special designs that also includes color schemes of predecessor railroads, as well as locomotives honoring veterans and company employees, according to Metro-North.
A limited-edition commemorative pin featuring the image of the locomotive will be available at the Grand Central Gift Shop, located in Grand Central Terminal, as an additional detail for the anniversary celebrations.
