Nevada Eyes I-15 Upgrades, Seeks Public Input

One of the main trucking corridors connecting Southern California and Las Vegas is being studied for major long-term upgrades. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is evaluating potential improvements along approximately 26 miles of Interstate 15 (I-15), from the California-Nevada state line to the Sloan Interchange, with the goal of preparing the highway for future traffic growth while improving safety and mobility.

The project is still in the planning stage. That is why NDOT will hold a public meeting in Las Vegas on Wednesday, September 9, where officials will explain the alternatives under consideration and gather feedback from residents, truckers and other I-15 users. Those unable to attend in person can also participate online.

The meeting will run from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at South Career and Technical Academy, 225 E. Starr Avenue, Las Vegas. A formal presentation followed by a Q&A session will begin at 5:30 p.m. Nevada time.

A Key Trucking Corridor

The importance of the project goes far beyond tourist traffic heading to Las Vegas. NDOT identifies I-15 as the primary transportation link between Southern California and Las Vegas and a critical freight corridor for Southern Nevada.

Much of the area between the state line and Sloan remains relatively undeveloped. However, projected growth is prompting Nevada officials to determine what infrastructure the corridor will need over the coming decades.

The study takes into account planned development — including projects such as the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport and Brightline West — as well as the possibility of much more extensive development between Jean and Sloan. According to projections included in the study, the potential development of roughly 31,000 acres in the area could place significant additional pressure on I-15.

One of the main alternatives under consideration is to widen I-15 between Jean and Sloan to four lanes in each direction, adding one lane each way.

What Changes Is NDOT Considering?

The preliminary alternatives are particularly relevant for the trucking industry.

In addition to widening I-15 between Jean and Sloan, NDOT is considering rebuilding the Primm and Sloan interchanges and adding new interchanges between Jean and Sloan, with a minimum spacing of approximately two miles. Two of those potential interchanges could be coordinated with structures planned for Brightline West, allowing infrastructure to be shared and potentially reducing costs.

The study also considers expanding intelligent transportation systems (ITS), including technology for connected vehicles and improved driver information and warning systems.

But another part of the plan directly affects truckers: more truck parking and improvements to weigh stations.

NDOT expects truck traffic to continue growing and says the corridor will need additional parking so drivers have safe places to stop and rest. The study also considers upgrades to weigh stations to improve safety and help enforce applicable weight limits.

Alternatives When I-15 Is Blocked

Another issue the study seeks to address is the lack of alternative routes.

A major crash on I-15 can lead to closures lasting several hours or even days. Along a corridor that crosses large stretches of desert, being stranded during an extended closure can also become a safety concern.

For that reason, the study considers future connections between I-15 and corridors such as US 95 and State Route 160, which could provide detour options when the interstate is blocked.

NDOT notes, however, that significant environmental constraints exist and that developing those connections would require coordination among multiple agencies and potentially private-sector participation.

Still in the Planning Stage

For truckers, there is an important distinction between improvements being studied and projects already approved for construction. The State Line-to-Sloan improvements are not yet a finalized construction package.

The current planning phase is expected to conclude in October 2026. The next step would be to begin the environmental process in 2027, allowing NDOT to evaluate the alternatives, potential environmental impacts and right-of-way requirements.

Once that process is completed, NDOT could determine how the project would be phased based on available funding before moving into design and construction.

NDOT estimates that improvements along the corridor could be needed over the next 20 years and acknowledges that traditional fuel-tax revenue would not be enough to fund the entire program. Potential funding options under consideration include public-private partnerships and competitive federal funding programs.

Truckers Can Weigh In

Wednesday’s meeting is part of that early planning process. NDOT wants to hear how the highway is currently being used, where drivers encounter problems and what needs should be considered before final alternatives are selected.

Those who cannot attend the meeting in person can still participate. The online public comment period will remain open through September 25, 2026, giving truckers and other frequent users of the corridor an opportunity to submit feedback.

I-15 Stateline to Sloan Feasibility Study – Information and Public Participation

For truckers who regularly run between California and Las Vegas, the study is worth watching. Decisions being discussed now could eventually determine how many lanes I-15 has, where future interchanges are located, how much truck parking is available and how weigh stations operate along one of Nevada’s most important freight corridors for decades to come.
