The shortage of safe truck parking has become a road safety, productivity, and logistics issue in the United States in recent years. States such as California, Texas, Florida, Washington, and Nevada reflect different dimensions of the same challenge: thousands of drivers need to comply with their required rest periods, yet there are not enough legal and safe spaces where they can do so.
National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW), an initiative of the American Trucking Associations (ATA), recognizes the nearly 3.6 million professional truck drivers working in the United States, as more than 80% of U.S. communities rely exclusively on trucking to receive goods.
But appreciating drivers also means looking at one of the most concrete challenges of their daily work. Long-haul drivers are subject to federal Hours of Service (HOS) regulations, which establish when they must stop and rest. That means finding parking is not simply a matter of convenience; it can also become a necessary condition for complying with safety regulations.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recognizes that a lack of parking can lead to lost productivity, higher transportation costs, congestion, and parking in unauthorized locations. Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) cites an industry estimate that finding a parking space can take an average of 56 minutes.
If the United States needs truck drivers to keep driving, where are they supposed to stop when their workday ends?

California: One of the Largest Shortfalls in the Country
California is a particularly clear example of the difference between having a large transportation network and having enough infrastructure for drivers to rest. The California Statewide Truck Parking Study identified approximately 15,033 truck parking spaces at 274 locations across the state. However, the same study estimated a statewide gap of approximately 3,400 spaces during periods of peak demand.
Additionally, of the spaces counted in the study, approximately 92% were located at commercial facilities, while public facilities accounted for roughly 8%. As a result, some urban areas and high-demand corridors experience shortages even when spaces are available elsewhere in the state.
Another study, the California Freight Mobility Plan, also found that approximately 40% of surveyed drivers perceived a shortage of truck parking in California, and that roughly half of the facilities analyzed were near capacity, at capacity, or over capacity during peak-demand periods.
For a driver traveling through California on I-5, I-10, I-15, I-80, or other major freight corridors, the existence of an available space dozens of miles away does not necessarily solve the problem.
Texas: More Spaces Across a Massive Freight Network
Texas presents a different scenario, with a significant increase in its truck parking inventory. An update presented to the Texas Freight Advisory Committee in September 2025 counted approximately 35,701 spaces at 710 facilities, an increase of roughly 34% over five years. The inventory included about 33,422 private spaces and 2,279 public spaces.
But a statewide figure does not tell the whole story. Texas is one of the country’s major freight hubs, with corridors spanning enormous distances and connecting ports, industrial cities, distribution centers, and border crossings.
The issue is particularly relevant near industrial areas, ports, and border crossings, where trucks may need to park while waiting for a loading or unloading window. In other words, Texas can have more spaces overall while still having specific locations where demand exceeds supply.
Florida: The I-4 Corridor Becomes a Case Study
Florida has made truck parking an explicit priority. An FDOT document published in February 2026 estimates that the state will need approximately 5,874 additional spaces by 2030. The agency identifies parking problems particularly around urban areas and along the I-10, I-75, I-95, and I-4 corridors, with I-4 standing out in particular.
In June 2026, projects began that are expected to add approximately 917 truck parking spaces in Central Florida through an approximately $180 million federal investment. FDOT stated that the I-4 corridor has the highest unmet truck parking demand in the state.
At the same time, FDOT is developing technology to provide drivers with real-time information about available spaces through its Truck Parking Availability System (TPAS). The strategy reflects an important reality: building more spaces is part of the solution, but knowing where a space is available before arriving can also reduce unnecessary driving and wasted time.
Washington: When a Lack of Parking Becomes a Time Problem
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) states that the state does not have enough truck parking spaces and ranks among the states with the lowest availability. The agency warns that drivers may be forced to park in unsuitable locations, with consequences for safety, communities, and infrastructure.
Washington’s Truck Parking Implementation Plan found that space utilization is particularly high overnight. According to an analysis based on Trucker Path data, estimated utilization exceeds 97% around midnight and remains above 93% until 4 a.m.
In September 2025, WSDOT also reported that 75% of surveyed Washington drivers said they had difficulty finding safe parking at least once a week. The agency further indicated that drivers frequently reported spending more than an hour looking for a space.
Washington is responding with a combination of infrastructure and technology. Its Truck Parking Information Management System (TPIMS) provides real-time and predictive information about available spaces along corridors such as I-5, with availability forecasts extending up to four hours.
Nevada: Major Corridors, Long Distances, and Critical Points
Nevada’s statewide truck parking plan identifies I-15, I-80, U.S. 93, and U.S. 95 as key corridors. The study found that long-haul parking needs are particularly significant along I-80 and I-15, and that shortages exist near urban and industrial areas, especially in Clark, Washoe, and Storey counties.
The state is also building new infrastructure. At Golconda Summit along I-80, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is adding 49 truck parking spaces, with 25 in the eastbound direction and 24 westbound. The agency noted that approximately 45% of traffic in the area consists of heavy vehicles.
In Nevada, the problem demonstrates that truck parking is not only an issue for major metropolitan areas. Along rural corridors, the distances between service points can mean that even a relatively small shortage has significant consequences for drivers who must comply with their required rest periods.

So, Why Not Simply Build More Truck Parking?
The answer is more complicated than it might seem. A truck parking facility needs land, appropriate access, services, security, and a connection to corridors where there is actual demand. In urban areas, land may compete with residential, commercial, and industrial uses. In addition, a facility may be close to a highway but far from the location where demand is actually concentrated.
That is why state plans are combining several strategies:
- More capacity – Expanding rest areas, creating dedicated truck parking facilities, and making use of existing public land.
- Better information – Systems such as TPAS and TPIMS allow drivers to know where spaces are available before they arrive.
- Public-private collaboration – In states where most parking spaces are privately operated, expanding supply also requires working with commercial operators.
- Corridor planning – The goal is not simply to add spaces, but to place them where demand is highest.
- Better use of existing infrastructure – In some cases, technology can help distribute demand and prevent certain parking facilities from remaining overcrowded while others still have available capacity.
The Question America Must Answer
National Truck Driver Appreciation Week 2026 once again puts drivers at the center of the national conversation, because the daily reality behind every delivery goes far beyond the miles traveled. A driver may complete their route, obey speed limits, comply with their Hours of Service requirements, and transport an essential load, yet still face a basic question at the end of the workday.
During a week dedicated to thanking truck drivers, the conversation can begin with something simple: thanking them for keeping the country moving. But a transportation policy truly focused on safety also requires answering a much less symbolic question:
