Retired truckers and some drivers who receive disability benefits may be among the millions of Americans receiving an unexpected $90 payment in October. If the money shows up in your bank account, it is not a special benefit for truckers. It is a Medicare rebate available to people who meet specific eligibility requirements.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) confirmed that this is a one-time $90 payment for 20.8 million beneficiaries enrolled in Original Medicare Part B.
The money comes from the Medicare Improvement Fund, which Congress created in 2008 to help fund improvements to traditional Medicare. The White House announced the payment on October 2.
Most eligible beneficiaries will receive the $90 through direct deposit around October 8, according to CMS. Those who do not receive benefits through direct deposit will get a Treasury Department check in the mail later.
It is not a Social Security increase
The $90 is not part of the regular monthly Social Security payment, does not represent a permanent increase in benefits and is not related to the annual cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA.
Instead, it is a one-time rebate connected to Medicare Part B, which covers services including doctor visits, outpatient care, certain preventive services and medical equipment.
In 2026, the standard Medicare Part B premium is $202.90 per month, although some beneficiaries pay more depending on their income.
For many beneficiaries, that premium is deducted directly from their monthly Social Security benefits. That is why, even though the new payment comes from Medicare, most of the $90 payments are being processed through the Social Security Administration.
Which truckers can receive the $90?
Eligibility for the payment has nothing to do with a beneficiary’s profession. A trucker does not receive $90 simply because he or she is a commercial driver, an owner-operator or previously worked in the transportation industry.
However, some current and former drivers may fall within the group of eligible beneficiaries.
A retired trucker enrolled in Original Medicare Part B who meets the other eligibility requirements may receive the payment.
The rebate may also apply to drivers under age 65 who qualify for Medicare because of a disability, provided they meet the requirements established for this payment. Medicare is not limited to seniors; certain people receiving Social Security disability benefits can also qualify for the program.
By contrast, a driver who is still working and has only private health insurance or an employer-sponsored health plan will not receive the $90 simply because he or she pays into Social Security.
People enrolled in Medicare Advantage are also excluded from this rebate, even if they have Medicare Part B, because of the specific eligibility rules established for the payment.
Who qualifies for the $90?
According to CMS, the payment will go to 20.8 million people enrolled in Original Medicare Part B who meet the federal government’s eligibility requirements.
To qualify, beneficiaries must live in the United States, must not receive Medicaid assistance to pay their Medicare premium and must not be subject to the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA), the additional amount certain higher-income beneficiaries pay for Medicare coverage.
CMS also states that people enrolled in Medicare Advantage are not eligible for this rebate.
The payment is automatic. Eligible beneficiaries do not need to submit an application or register on a website to receive it.
When and how will the money arrive?
CMS says the vast majority of eligible beneficiaries will receive a $90 direct deposit from the Social Security Administration around October 8.
Those who do not have direct deposit set up will receive a check mailed to the address Medicare has on file later in October.
Checks issued by the Treasury Department will include a reference to the Medicare Improvement Fund and indicate that the payment is intended to offset the October premium.
That means two people who qualify for the same benefit may receive their money on different dates: one by direct deposit and another by mail.
How can I find out if I qualify?
$90 Medicare Payment: Are You One of the 20 Million Getting It?
Medicare Part B beneficiaries can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to find out whether they qualify for the rebate.
If you know you are eligible but want to check the status of your payment, CMS says you can contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 beginning October 15, 2026.
Watch out for scams
The distribution of millions of unexpected payments can also create opportunities for scammers.
The federal government does not require beneficiaries to submit an application to receive the $90. Any text message, email or phone call asking for bank information, a Social Security number, Medicare information or an upfront payment to “release” the money should be treated with caution.
Beneficiaries should contact Medicare or the Social Security Administration directly through their official channels if they have questions about the payment.
This is a one-time payment
Anyone who receives the $90 should not treat it as a new source of monthly income.
CMS specifies that this is a single $90 rebate being issued in October 2026. It does not mean that monthly Social Security benefits have increased by $90, and the payment will not automatically repeat in future months.
For retired truckers and other transportation workers enrolled in Medicare, the key is to check what type of coverage they have. Original Medicare Part B, Medicare Advantage enrollment, Medicaid assistance and income level can all determine whether the $90 payment applies.
