How to prevent allergies and flu on the road
Here are some measures to stay healthy and reduce, as much as possible, the risk of seasonal allergies as a trucker.

Spring is a season full of life: flowers bloom, plants turn green, birds sing, and animals come out of hibernation… but allergies also arrive. It is estimated that around 106 million people in the United States are allergic to pollen, and 31.7% of adults suffer from seasonal allergies.

According to a report from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), seasonal allergies and pollen-related respiratory issues have increased in recent years, partly due to pollution and climate change.

In addition to allergies, this season also tends to bring the flu and other respiratory illnesses. People who spend a lot of time outdoors or engage in activities outside the home are more likely to be affected. Among them are truck drivers, who are not only constantly exposed but also often travel to states with high pollen levels, increasing the risk of allergies and seasonal illnesses.

How to protect yourself from seasonal allergies and flu as a truck driver

Not all is lost. Despite rising pollen levels and pollution, there are ways to prevent allergies and seasonal illnesses. The AAFA recommends, above all, covering your eyes, nose, and mouth when going outside to reduce exposure to bacteria and allergens in the air.

Here are additional measures to stay healthy and reduce, as much as possible, the risk of seasonal illnesses:

1. Nutrition and hydration

Staying healthy on the road is essential to preventing illness. A balanced diet and proper hydration should be part of your daily routine, as both are necessary to endure long trips, stay healthy, and strengthen your immune system.

Here are some simple and healthy snack ideas that can make a difference:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables (especially those rich in vitamin C)
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Hummus
  • Greek yogurt
  • Boiled eggs
  • Rice cakes

And of course, don’t forget to drink water regularly.

3. Physical activity

Physical activity also helps maintain good health, especially if you spend long periods in the same position. Although it can be difficult for truck drivers to find time to exercise, they can start with small stretching routines.

Here are some simple ways truck drivers can stay active on the road:

  • Basic stretches
  • Walking
  • Portable equipment: resistance bands, dumbbells, or ankle/wrist weights
  • Bodyweight exercises: squats, push-ups, or lunges during stops
  • Bicycle: if possible, using a folding bike for 20 to 30 minutes can improve circulation and overall fitness

3. Cleanliness in your truck

Dust carries bacteria and allergens, so keeping your cab clean and disinfecting it regularly will have a positive impact on your respiratory health. Be sure to frequently disinfect surfaces you touch with unclean hands and keep hand sanitizer in your truck.

It is also recommended to carry disinfectant wipes, gloves, and face masks. If you have access to medication, don’t forget to bring loratadine or other antihistamines to reduce symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and eye irritation. Stay healthy and safe on the road.
