In recent weeks, reports of large, mysterious drones flying over parts of New Jersey have raised concerns among residents and officials. These drones, which seem to evade detection by conventional methods such as helicopters and radio, have prompted a flurry of investigations and speculation. The Department of Homeland Security briefed state lawmakers on the matter, though many questions remain unanswered.
Characteristics and Sightings
Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia, sharing updates on the platform X, described the drones as having diameters of up to six feet and sometimes operating with their lights off. The sightings have been reported from the New York City area through New Jersey and into parts of Pennsylvania, including over Philadelphia. Many of the drones are larger than those typically used by hobbyists and do not appear to be recreational in nature, according to Fantasia.
The sightings, which began last month, have sparked particular concern because some occurred near sensitive locations such as the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research facility, and President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. Despite their legality for recreational and commercial use, drones in New Jersey must adhere to both local and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, and their operators must be FAA certified.
Official Responses
Governor Phil Murphy and law enforcement officials have stated that the drones do not appear to pose an immediate threat to public safety. However, the FBI has launched an investigation and is urging the public to provide any photos, videos, or other information related to the sightings.
Some officials have called for more aggressive actions. U.S. Representatives Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew have urged the military to shoot down the drones. Smith cited an incident in which a dozen drones reportedly followed a Coast Guard lifeboat near Barnegat Light and Island Beach State Park. Coast Guard Lt. Luke Pinneo confirmed the presence of multiple low-altitude aircraft near one of their vessels but stated they did not disrupt operations.
In a letter to U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Smith emphasized the need for military assistance in addressing the issue, noting that Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst has the capability to identify and neutralize unauthorized unmanned aerial systems. However, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh dismissed the notion that a foreign entity or adversary is behind the activity. She assured reporters that the drones did not threaten U.S. installations.
Public Reaction and Speculation
The unexplained drone activity has fueled public concern and conspiracy theories. James Edwards, a resident of Succasunna, New Jersey, reported seeing several drones in his neighborhood. “It raises concern mainly because there’s so much that’s unknown,” he said. Edwards cautioned against letting fear and speculation escalate, urging people to wait for concrete answers.
While some lawmakers have proposed stricter regulations or even a temporary ban on drone flights, others remain skeptical about the nature of the sightings. Republican Assemblyman Erik Peterson, who attended a recent briefing by the Department of Homeland Security, noted that not all reported sightings have been confirmed as drones. “My understanding is they have no clue,” Peterson said, summarizing the lack of clear answers from officials.
Ongoing Investigation
The FBI, along with state and local agencies, continues to investigate the sightings. Robert Wheeler, assistant director of the FBI’s Critical Incident Response Group, recently testified to Congress that the bureau has not yet identified any individual or group responsible. Meanwhile, reports of drones persist, with some being spotted near coastal areas and over a reservoir in Clinton, New Jersey.
Despite the uncertainty, officials have stressed the importance of a measured response. While conspiracy theories abound, the lack of evidence pointing to foreign involvement or adversarial intent underscores the need for careful investigation rather than alarm.
