Federal regulators have launched an investigation into nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 trucks from model years 2015 to 2017 following consumer complaints about sudden downshifting incidents that could pose a serious safety risk.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 138 complaints have been filed by F-150 owners reporting unexpected downshifts while driving at high speeds. Some drivers claimed the abrupt shift to a lower gear caused the truck’s rear wheels to lock up temporarily, making the vehicle difficult to control. So far, no crashes or injuries have been linked to the issue.
The investigation focuses on the trucks’ six-speed automatic transmission. A Ford spokesperson acknowledged the problem and confirmed the company is “working with NHTSA to support its investigation.”
This new probe adds to a string of recent safety concerns for the automaker. Just last month, Ford recalled over 240,000 Explorer models due to improperly secured seatbelts. Earlier in March, the company also issued a re-recall of nearly 12,833 Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles because of problems with prior repairs.
Despite the growing scrutiny, Ford’s stock rose more than 1% during Monday’s trading session.
The outcome of the investigation could lead to another significant recall if regulators determine that the transmission issue poses a risk to drivers and passengers.
