DOT Bots Challenge: USDOT Offers $1.5 Million for Transportation Robotics Innovations

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has launched a new nationwide competition aimed at finding innovative ways to use robotics throughout the U.S. transportation system. The “DOT Bots Challenge” is a groundbreaking competition designed to transform the nation’s transportation industry.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the initiative will award up to $1.5 million in prize funding to encourage innovation. The competition welcomes solutions that support the development of new robotic platforms and use cases capable of improving worker and traveler safety while optimizing how transportation infrastructure is built, maintained, and operated.

The competition will remain open through August 10, 2026, and finalists are expected to be announced later this year.

DOT Bots Challenge: Transforming the Transportation Industry

The DOT Bots Challenge comes at a time when robotics is becoming increasingly integrated into transportation, performing tasks such as safety inspections, maintenance, and construction. However, the initiative is intended to support innovation across all areas of transportation—not just automation.

“From supersonic flights to autonomous vehicles and delivery drones, American innovation is already transforming how we think about transportation,” Duffy said in a statement. “To ensure the United States remains at the forefront, we must invest in our nation’s best and brightest ideas, including robotics.”

According to the official USDOT announcement, the competition will be conducted in two separate phases:

• Phase I – Proof of Concept: Participants will submit concept papers addressing public-sector transportation needs.
• Phase II – Demonstration: Finalists will develop physical, functional prototypes. The Department of Transportation (DOT) specified that virtual prototypes will not be eligible, as the goal is to showcase technologies that can be demonstrated in real-world operational environments.

During Phase I, the DOT will select up to five finalists to advance to Phase II, where they will develop a working prototype of their concept and compete for cash prizes. Each Phase I finalist will receive $100,000 in prize money, which may be used to fund prototype development. In Phase II, the DOT will select one winning team to receive the remainder of the prize pool.

Robotics in U.S. Transportation

According to the Department of Transportation, robotic technologies are already being used for bridge, roadway, and pavement inspections, construction projects, highway maintenance, hazardous work environments, and infrastructure monitoring. Expanding the use of these technologies could enable faster problem detection, resulting in quicker repairs and fewer disruptions to the supply chain.

For truck drivers, the greatest impact is likely to come through infrastructure improvements rather than changes behind the wheel. As robotics becomes more common within state departments of transportation, these technologies could reduce the amount of time workers spend in hazardous areas alongside active traffic, improving safety for both highway maintenance crews and the commercial vehicles traveling nearby.

The proposal submission period is now open, with a deadline of August 10, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. PST. Phase I finalists are expected to be announced in fall 2026, while the grand prize winner is scheduled to be announced in fall 2027.
