If you are a commercial vehicle driver based in Washington and operate across state lines, you will likely need an IFTA license. Understanding when this requirement applies can help you avoid penalties, stay compliant, and simplify your fuel tax reporting.
The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is an agreement among most U.S. states and Canadian provinces that simplifies fuel tax reporting for motor carriers operating in more than one jurisdiction. Instead of filing separate fuel tax returns in each state, carriers submit a single quarterly report through their base jurisdiction.
Who Needs an IFTA License in Washington?
In general, a commercial vehicle operator needs an IFTA license if the company is based in Washington, the vehicle operates in two or more IFTA-member states or provinces, and the vehicle meets any of the following criteria:
- Has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 26,000 pounds.
- Has three or more axles, regardless of weight.
- Is a combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight of more than 26,000 pounds.
If you operate only within Washington and never cross state lines, you generally do not need an IFTA license. However, it is always best to confirm with your employer or motor carrier to avoid potential penalties.
What Are the Benefits of an IFTA License?
Obtaining an IFTA license allows you to:
- File a single quarterly fuel tax return.
- Avoid registering separately for fuel taxes in multiple states.
- Simplify tracking of fuel purchases and miles traveled.
- Stay compliant with interstate operating regulations.

What Are an IFTA Carrier’s Responsibilities?
IFTA license holders must:
- File quarterly fuel tax returns, even if there were no operations or no tax is due.
- Maintain accurate records of mileage and fuel purchases.
- Keep copies of the IFTA license and display the required IFTA decals on each qualified vehicle.
IFTA returns must be filed by the last day of the month following the end of each calendar quarter. If the due date falls on a weekend or holiday, it moves to the next business day. The filing deadlines for 2026 are:
- First Quarter 2026: Due April 30, 2026.
- Second Quarter 2026: Due July 31, 2026.
- Third Quarter 2026: Due October 31, 2026.
- Fourth Quarter 2026: Due February 1, 2027.
