Alabama’s freight transportation industry is preparing for a major change with the construction of the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF), a new intermodal terminal designed to connect the Port of Mobile with businesses, manufacturers, distributors, and logistics operators in central Alabama through a combination of rail and trucking.
The project, led by the Alabama Port Authority in partnership with CSX Transportation, continues to move forward and remains on track to begin operations in early 2027. The facility represents an expansion of the Port of Mobile’s inland logistics capacity and is intended to facilitate the movement of containers between marine terminals, rail lines, and highways connecting Montgomery with other U.S. markets.
For the trucking industry, the new infrastructure could change how certain freight shipments enter and leave the region. Rather than relying exclusively on trucking between Mobile and Montgomery, part of the container movement will be handled by rail and then transferred to trucks for regional distribution.
A 272-Acre Terminal Connected to CSX
The Montgomery ICTF is being developed on approximately 272 acres and will include more than 25,000 feet of railroad track. The facility will be directly connected to the CSX network, allowing containers to move between the Port of Mobile and the Montgomery market. The Alabama Port Authority projects an annual capacity of approximately 60,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).
The complex will be located near major transportation corridors, including Interstate 85 and U.S. Highway 31, providing a strategic location to serve Alabama’s manufacturing, automotive, distribution, and logistics industries. The design includes areas for container storage and handling, railroad tracks, truck circulation, administrative and maintenance buildings, as well as access infrastructure for the terminal.
The combination of rail and ground transportation will allow freight to switch between transportation modes within the facility itself. This is particularly relevant for companies that need to move large volumes of cargo between seaports and inland distribution centers.
The project has an estimated cost of approximately $100 million, according to recent communications from the Alabama Port Authority. A significant portion of the funding comes from federal allocations, while the project also includes contributions from CSX and port authority resources. Officials said the project remained on schedule to begin operations in early 2027.

A New Connection Between the Port and Inland Alabama
The new terminal is also part of a broader strategy to develop Montgomery as a transportation and distribution hub. According to the Montgomery Regional Chamber, billions of dollars in private investment have been announced in the area surrounding the future facility since the project was initially announced.
Its location near major interstate highways, the availability of land for industrial and logistics activities, and its connection to the CSX rail network are factors that could support the growth of warehouses, distribution centers, and operations related to international trade.
For the transportation industry, this could translate into increased demand for drayage services, container transportation, regional distribution, warehousing, and intermodal logistics. The Montgomery development will be an important project that could change how certain containers are moved between the Port of Mobile and central Alabama by combining the capacity of rail with the flexibility of trucking.
