The CA number is a unique number assigned by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to commercial vehicles operating in California. This number allows the state to monitor compliance with state regulations and safety and environmental standards.

It is a permit issued by the DMV to operate cargo in the State of California. Drivers who transport property, operate large commercial vehicles, transport hazardous materials, or operate vehicles that require a commercial driver’s license need a motor carrier permit (MCP) as proof that they have registered their California Carrier Identification Number (CA#) with the DMV. The MCP number will be the same as the CA#.

It is a code that allows commercial and government organizations to monitor the driving records of employees who drive for them. It provides companies with a quick way to keep track of their employees’ driving records.

* Issuance and activation of permits depend on processing times by the FMCSA (DOT), CHP (CA), and DMV (MCP & EPN). The process is completed in an average of 4 to 6 weeks, provided all legal requirements are met (DMV requires proof of liability insurance for the MCP).
