U-Turns at the Port of Laredo, Texas Could Cost Truck Drivers Up to $2,000

The city of Laredo, Texas, implemented a new policy on August 17 that increases penalties for commercial motor vehicles making U-turns within the city’s bridge system.

The measure aims to reduce delays and offset the costs associated with these maneuvers. According to the Laredo Border Crossing Advisory Committee, each U-turn adds between five and seven minutes of additional delay to commercial traffic, and approximately 130 U-turns are recorded each month.

Fines will be $500 for the first violation, $1,000 for the second, and $2,000 for the third, in addition to the applicable toll fees per axle. Authorities say the penalties are intended to discourage U-turns and facilitate the flow of commercial transportation.

New measures have also been established for accounts with insufficient funds. Drivers will be allowed to make up to three crossings before the account is suspended, but accounts with more than three U-turn violations and insufficient funds will be subject to a $200 reactivation fee. In addition, commercial accounts must have a valid credit card on file and enroll in the automatic reload service.

Port of Laredo officials say the goal is not to cancel accounts, but rather to keep trade moving efficiently. The measure is particularly significant given the volume of trade passing through the city. In 2025, more than $350 billion in international trade passed through Laredo, which also ranked first nationwide in numerous export and import categories.

Located between Love’s locations in Three Rivers and Edinburg, the new Premont travel stop will provide direct support for regional commerce and the national supply chain by adding essential truck parking and fueling capacity along a heavily trafficked freight corridor. The Premont travel stop will also include designated space for electric vehicle chargers.

The company has also recently completed renovations at its stores in Waco, Georgia; Lordsburg, New Mexico; Greenville, Illinois; Conneaut, Ohio; Walters, Oklahoma; and Baxter, Tennessee. The renovated spaces are designed to improve traffic flow and enhance the overall shopping experience for customers.
