Texas is home to some of the most specialized heavy haul operations. Moving equipment for the oil and gas industry requires special permits.

When people think about the Texas oil industry, they usually picture drilling rigs, pump jacks, pipelines, and refineries. What many don’t see is the massive transportation network operating behind every new well.

Every drilling rig, frac pump, storage tank, compressor, and section of pipeline must travel hundreds of miles before reaching an oilfield. Many of these components weigh several times more than a standard commercial truck, making their transportation subject to some of the strictest regulations in the United States.

In major energy-producing regions such as the Permian Basin and Eagle Ford, oversized and overweight convoys travel every day under carefully coordinated operations involving pilot cars, police escorts, and permits specifically designed to protect highways and bridges.

Can Anyone Enter This Business?

The short answer is no.

Although any qualified carrier can apply for special hauling permits, entering the oilfield heavy haul market requires a massive financial investment that can easily exceed $1 million.

A hydraulic modular trailer, heavy-duty lowboy, or multi-axle trailer can cost several hundred thousand dollars. Companies must also invest in high-horsepower tractors, specialized drivers, extensive training, significantly higher insurance coverage, and experienced logistics personnel.

In addition, carriers must demonstrate their ability to comply with both state and federal regulations, obtain permits, design legal routes, and coordinate escort vehicles whenever required.

For these reasons, the market is dominated by highly specialized heavy haul companies.

Why Are These Loads So Expensive?

Transporting oilfield equipment is nothing like hauling a standard dry van load.

While conventional freight is generally priced by the mile, heavy haul pricing depends on numerous variables, including:

Total weight of the load

Overall dimensions

Number of axles required

State and local permits

Pilot vehicles

Police escorts

Engineering studies

Time-of-day travel restrictions

In many cases, planning the move takes longer than the transportation itself.

A single project may require bridge engineering evaluations, route surveys, coordination with utility companies to temporarily lift overhead power lines, and approvals from multiple counties.

All of these factors significantly increase the cost of the operation.

Within the industry, it is common for a specialized oilfield move to generate several times the revenue of a conventional truckload—especially when transporting superheavy equipment.

Permits Depend on the Type of Load

Texas establishes a legal gross vehicle weight limit of 80,000 pounds for most commercial trucks.

Whenever a shipment exceeds those limits, carriers must obtain special authorization.

Oil Well Servicing Permits allow the transportation of specific equipment used in oilfield operations.

Oversize/Overweight (OS/OW) Permits authorize loads that exceed standard legal dimensions or weight.

When a shipment exceeds approximately 254,000 pounds or involves extraordinary dimensions, it is generally classified as Superheavy, requiring detailed bridge analysis and a route engineered specifically for that move.

Companies that regularly serve oilfields may also qualify for annual permits covering designated energy corridors, reducing the need to obtain permits for every individual trip.

Not Every Highway Can Handle These Loads

One of the least-known aspects of heavy hauling is that not every road is capable of supporting these enormous loads.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) evaluates highways based on pavement strength, bridge capacity, and overhead clearances.

Many rural roads have permanent weight restrictions that force heavy haul convoys to take much longer routes.

In addition, numerous oil-producing counties—including Midland, Ector, Reeves, Loving, Karnes, and La Salle—require their own local permits for county roads.

This means a carrier may receive state approval while still needing additional authorization to travel the final miles into an oilfield.

More Weight Means More Axles

One of the most interesting aspects of heavy haul transportation is that success is not simply about moving more weight—it’s about distributing that weight safely.

That’s why many specialized trailers feature dozens of wheels.

Some configurations use eight, ten, twelve, or even more axle lines to reduce pavement pressure.

The better the load is distributed, the greater the chance of obtaining approval for the route.

Why Do Oversized Loads Always Have Pilot Cars?

Escort vehicles do much more than simply lead the convoy.

They play a critical role in maintaining roadway safety.

If a load exceeds 12 feet in width, Texas typically requires at least one pilot vehicle.

Between 14 and 16 feet, two escort vehicles are often necessary.

If the load exceeds 17 feet in height, one of the most recognizable vehicles in American heavy haul operations joins the convoy: the high-pole vehicle.

This specially equipped pickup truck carries a telescoping pole that drives ahead of the convoy, checking for overhead power lines, traffic signals, bridges, and other clearance hazards.

If an obstruction is detected, the convoy stops before causing an accident that could result in millions of dollars in damages.

For the largest moves, officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) or local sheriff’s departments may assist by temporarily controlling traffic at major intersections.

Strict Travel Hours

Most heavy haul operations are only permitted during daylight hours.

Permits generally authorize travel beginning 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset.

If fog, dust storms, or heavy rain reduce visibility below approximately 500 feet, the convoy must stop immediately.

Additional travel restrictions also apply during peak traffic periods in cities such as Midland, Odessa, and San Antonio.

Interesting Facts Few People Know

Transporting a single drilling rig may require more than 100 truck trips to move every component to the drilling location.

Some hydraulic fracturing pumps weigh more than three fully loaded highway trucks.

The largest superheavy convoys may travel at extremely low speeds while temporarily occupying both lanes of a rural highway.

For certain exceptional moves, utility companies must temporarily raise overhead power lines or remove traffic signs to allow the load to pass.

That is why an oilfield convoy involves much more than professional truck drivers. Engineers, route planners, bridge inspectors, pilot car operators, utility crews, law enforcement officers, and oilfield personnel all work together to make these moves possible.

In Texas, transporting oilfield equipment is far more than hauling an oversized load—it’s a highly coordinated operation where every permit, every additional axle, and every mile traveled is part of a plan that often begins weeks before the truck starts its engine.
