America250 Hits the Rails, Roads, and Skies With Commemorative Vehicles
As the 250th Anniversary of the U.S. Independence approaches, special-edition transportation vehicles take center stage.

As the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence approaches (America250), with celebrations set for July 4, 2026, many air and ground transportation companies have unveiled special-edition vehicles to commemorate the milestone.

From locomotives to trucks that will also serve as mobile museums, the U.S. transportation industry has embraced the historic occasion on a grand scale. Several of these projects are part of America250, a bipartisan initiative designed to engage all Americans in celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary.

America250 Commemorative Vehicles

Trains and Locomotives

Union Pacific Railroad (UP), one of the most renowned railroad companies in the United States, is marking the occasion with two new commemorative locomotives, as well as the first anniversary tour of Big Boy, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive.

The railroad is celebrating the nation’s founding with Locomotive No. 1776 – America250, which features a waving American flag set against Union Pacific’s signature Armor Yellow paint scheme, along with the official America250 logo.

The company has also chosen to honor U.S. presidents through its heritage fleet. Locomotive No. 1616 pays tribute to President Abraham Lincoln, while the newest commemorative locomotive, No. 4547, developed in partnership with Wabtec, honors current President Donald J. Trump. The fleet also includes No. 4141, dedicated to President George H. W. Bush.

Joining the celebrations, Metro-North Railroad unveiled its “America 250” locomotive on April 30 through social media. The railroad renumbered one of its P32AC-DM locomotives as No. 250 and gave it a patriotic red, white, and blue paint scheme.

The locomotive is the ninth in a series of special liveries that also includes paint schemes honoring predecessor railroads, military veterans, and Metro-North employees.

Aircraft

Several airlines have introduced specially painted aircraft in honor of the anniversary.

Southwest Airlines has unveiled a patriotic Boeing 737 featuring the number “1776” painted near the cockpit and the phrase “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”—taken from the Declaration of Independence—displayed toward the rear of the aircraft.

The aircraft also features 13 stars representing the original colonies along its fuselage, while circles of stars on each engine nacelle recreate the original Betsy Ross flag. America250 decals appear on both the nose and the winglets. Southwest is also flying its existing patriotic liveries, Freedom One and Liberty One.

Meanwhile, United Airlines continues flying its “Stars and Stripes” livery on both a Boeing 787-10 and a Boeing 737-800. Featuring a red, white, and blue design, both aircraft display 50 white stars across the rear third of the fuselage extending onto the tail. Each also carries a commemorative plaque honoring United’s active-duty service members and military veterans.

American Airlines has also joined the celebration by painting an Embraer E175, operated by Envoy Air, as well as introducing a special Boeing 737 MAX in an America250-themed livery. The aircraft features bold red, white, and blue graphics that form the number “250” across the sides of the brand-new jet.

Trucks

PacLease is commemorating the national milestone by equipping its U.S.-based rental trucks with custom America250 graphics.

“We want to celebrate alongside the rest of the industry; other companies are launching similar projects. Our rental fleet allows us to showcase the pride we feel for the United States,” said Michelle Harry, PACCAR’s Director of Marketing and Leasing Services.

Perhaps the most ambitious trucking initiative isFreedom Trucks“, a fleet of six museum-style semi-trailers traveling across the country with interactive historical exhibits. Inside each mobile museum, an artificial intelligence-generated George Washington welcomes visitors beneath a ceiling displaying the words “In God We Trust.”

The museum trucks have spread across the nation—from Washington State on the West Coast to North Carolina on the East Coast—bringing the story of America’s 250th anniversary directly to communities nationwide.
