The Georgia Department of Transportation has begun developing a project that plans to add commercial vehicle lanes on I-75. The Commercial Vehicle Lanes Project (CVL) proposes adding two northbound lanes along Interstate 75, from the I-75/I-475 interchange in Monroe County to near the State Route 20 interchange in Henry County, exclusively for commercial vehicles.
The goal of the project is to improve travel times and mobility while enhancing safety. State transportation officials expect the lanes to reduce delays for commercial vehicles, as well as in the general-purpose lanes, during peak hours.
The new lanes will be toll-free and will span five counties: Henry, Spalding, Butts, Lamar, and Monroe, covering a total distance of approximately 41 miles. The I-75 CVL will modernize freight transportation infrastructure and operations to drive economic growth, increase competitiveness, and improve quality of life, the Georgia Department of Transportation stated in its official release.
I-75 Commercial Vehicle Lanes (CVL) Project
The project is still in the development phase. During this stage, project limits are evaluated, design standards are developed, environmentally sensitive areas are identified, current and future freight and passenger traffic patterns are studied, and potential access points are determined.
The I-75 CVL is the first project of its kind in the United States, as it will include two toll-free segments along northbound I-75, from I-475 north of Macon to the vicinity of SR 20 near McDonough.

According to the document published by the Georgia Department of Transportation, the two commercial vehicle lanes will be separated from the general-purpose lanes by a barrier, with the aim of facilitating the creation of a connected multimodal transportation network and contributing to long-term improvements in the quality of life for Georgia residents.
Eventually, the project will include direct access ramps, with a possible interchange at Bethlehem Road, to support the future use of connected and autonomous vehicle technology.
The Georgia DOT has updated the project’s preliminary conceptual design to illustrate the preferred alternative, with an environmental document published on its official website. This document provides an evaluation of the preferred alternative, various technical and environmental studies, and the potential impacts along the project corridor.
The Georgia Department of Transportation invites all stakeholders in the transportation sector to review the project materials. From the publication date through May 28, 2026, the DOT will be accepting public comments on the I-75 CVL project.
In addition, an open house with a public hearing is planned to receive feedback on the project. The upcoming events scheduled by the DOT will take place on the following dates:
