The alliance aims to develop comprehensive infrastructure for long-haul electric trucks
Microsoft, PepsiCo, Maersk, DB Schenker, and AIT Worldwide have joined forces in an ambitious initiative to electrify the trucking corridor along Interstate 10 (I-10), which connects Los Angeles with El Paso, Texas. This stretch links two of the busiest ports in the United States and the second-busiest border crossing in the country. The alliance aims to develop comprehensive infrastructure for long-haul electric trucks, promoting sustainability and reducing emissions in freight logistics.
Microsoft and Maersk North America emphasized the importance of this project, highlighting how logistics is evolving towards an electric-powered model. Both stressed the need for all stakeholders to invest and show ambition. This groundbreaking initiative represents a significant leap forward in the transition to sustainable transportation, setting a new standard for electrifying long-haul trucking.
National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy
PepsiCo, known for its leadership in fleet management and the testing of electric trucks such as the Tesla Semi, continues to advance towards sustainable transportation with its fleet of 11,618 tractors in North America. Maersk North America is also committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 and actively participates in this initiative. DB Schenker plays a key role in the project, which has the support of the Smart Freight Centre and TeraWatt Infrastructure. TeraWatt, with its CEO Neha Palmer highlighting the project’s significance, will manage six charging centers along the I-10 corridor, contributing to transforming fleet electrification into a complete ecosystem.
This effort is part of the first phase of the U.S. government’s National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy. In February, the Federal Highway Administration awarded the New Mexico Department of Transportation $63.8 million to build freight corridors along I-10, with TeraWatt responsible for designing, constructing, operating, and owning the charging facilities.
PepsiCo is also collaborating with TeraWatt to build its first heavy-duty truck charging facility near Los Angeles, with plans to integrate battery-electric trucks into its operations. This project marks a milestone in transforming road transportation, underscoring a significant commitment to sustainability and emission reduction in the logistics sector.
By developing robust infrastructure along the I-10 corridor and fostering collaboration among industry leaders, this project not only addresses the urgent need for reduced emissions but also paves the way for a more sustainable and efficient logistics sector. As this project unfolds, it will likely serve as a model for future efforts in freight electrification, demonstrating how strategic partnerships and innovation can effectively tackle the challenges of climate change.
