Priorities 2023: ATRI published what the new lines of research will be

Women in the industry, truckers’ stops and much more.

The Board of Directors of the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has approved the Top Research Priorities for 2023, as identified by ATRI’s Research Advisory Committee (RAC). The most critical issues affecting the sector have been chosen from the list. The main one: stops and breaks.

The issues that concern ATRI:

Expansion of Truck Parking in Public Rest Areas. “The lack of available parking for trucks is always considered by drivers as their main concern. This research will identify and map truck driver needs for rest stop attributes, develop best practice case studies, and use truck driver data to identify strategies to expand available truck parking capacity in public rest areas”, detailed the organization.

Women without barriers. 10 percent of truckers are women. The documentation available to ATRI determined that they are safer than their male partners. That is why ATRI will analyze gender issues and what measures the industry can take to incorporate more women.

Impact of Complete Streets on the Mobility of Goods. ATRA clarifies on this topic: “Complete Streets is a US DOT program designed to make transportation accessible to all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit riders. However, planning decisions to implement full streets often have a negative impact on freight transportation and those who rely on truck-delivered goods. This study will quantify these impacts and recommend approaches for transportation planners to better facilitate freight movement”.

No diesel technicians. Both drivers and diesel technicians are in short supply in the United States. At this point, the factors underlying the lack of this type of professional will be analyzed and the training in secondary school will be evaluated so that more people access this career.

The cost of arresting the driver. Stopping too long at one location is a huge waste of money for motor carriers. For this reason, new strategies and impacts will be analyzed to minimize these arrests.

ATRI is the trucking industry’s 501c3 nonprofit research organization. It is engaged in critical research related to the essential role of freight transport in maintaining a safe, secure and efficient transport system.
