Some truck crashes attract attention not because of the number of victims, but because they leave behind one unavoidable question: How did that happen?
In 2026, several unusual incidents involving commercial vehicles and bridges occurred across the United States. Some resulted in highway closures, structural inspections, damaged vehicles, and expensive repairs — fortunately, without becoming mass-casualty events.
But behind the extraordinary images is a much bigger transportation problem. The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) states in its 2026 National Freight Strategic Plan that the United States experiences an estimated 14,500 bridge strikes per year. The agency specifically identifies oversized vehicles and elevated equipment, including crane booms, among the risks capable of causing significant infrastructure damage.
1. Kansas: A Log Truck’s Crane Struck a Bridge
One of the most unusual incidents occurred on August 7, 2026, in southern Miami County, Kansas. A truck hauling logs was traveling north on U.S. 69 when the crane mounted on the vehicle struck the West 399th Street bridge.
The impact damaged the structure and forced transportation authorities to restrict traffic while the bridge was inspected.

The incident illustrates one of the risks specifically identified by USDOT: elevated components on commercial vehicles, including crane booms, can pose a serious threat to bridges and other infrastructure.
2. New York: The Tow Truck Fit — But Its Cargo Didn’t
On July 9, 2026, New York State Police responded to an unusual crash on Interstate 81 in Cicero, New York.
An International flatbed tow truck was carrying a 2019 Ford F-550 on its platform. As the tow truck attempted to travel beneath the Taft Road Bridge, something extraordinary happened: the Ford F-550 being transported on the flatbed struck the underside of the bridge.
Both the transported vehicle and the bridge were damaged. The most important detail, however, was much better news: no injuries were reported. New York State Police also reported that the tow truck driver received multiple traffic tickets.

The case demonstrates a critical lesson for commercial transportation: knowing the height of the truck itself is not enough. Drivers and carriers need to know the total height of the vehicle, equipment, and cargo as actually configured for the trip.
3. Wyoming: A Bridge Strike Became a Major Repair Project
Another significant incident involved the Interstate 80 corridor in Rawlins, Wyoming.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) confirmed that the bridge at Exit 214, which carries South Higley Boulevard over I-80, had been struck and required a dedicated repair project.
On August 27, WYDOT announced that the Exit 214 bridge repair would be advertised separately for bidding in October 2026.
It is an important reminder of the disproportionate consequences of these incidents. A bridge strike can happen in seconds. The infrastructure consequences can last for months.

The Mistake Many of These Accidents Have in Common
A bridge does not suddenly change height.
A commercial vehicle’s total configuration can.
A vehicle loaded onto a flatbed changes the overall height.
A crane boom can remain elevated.
A dump body may not be fully lowered.
An oversized load may require a completely different route.
That is why carriers need to consider the actual dimensions of the entire vehicle and load combination — not simply the nominal dimensions of the tractor or trailer.
USDOT identifies several opportunities to reduce bridge strikes, including improved low-clearance signage, advance warning systems, more accurate clearance information, and better routing for overheight vehicles.
