How Truck Drivers Can Protect Their Skin from UV Rays on the Road
Chronic exposure to UVA rays isn't just about getting a tan—learn how to protect your skin from the sun's rays while on the road.

Commercial truck drivers spend countless hours behind the wheel, often under the relentless glare of the sun. UV rays are not completely blocked by the driver’s side window, and over time, high exposure can lead to skin damage such as premature aging and even more serious risks, including skin cancer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, with basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma being the most prevalent forms. It is estimated that approximately 3.6 million cases of basal cell carcinoma and around 1.8 million cases of squamous cell carcinoma are diagnosed each year.

Although many truck drivers believe they are protected from the sun while inside their vehicles, the reality is that standard truck windows only block UVB rays. UVA rays, which are responsible for deeper skin damage, can pass through glass and directly affect the skin.

Chronic exposure to UVA rays is about much more than just getting a tan. The good news is that there are simple and effective ways for truck drivers to protect themselves from sun damage.

How Can Truck Drivers Protect Themselves from Sun Exposure?

Sunscreen

The easiest and most effective way to protect your skin from UVA damage is to wear sunscreen every day. Dermatologists recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or 50. This helps protect the skin’s elastic fibers from both UVA and UVB rays.

Applying sunscreen to commonly exposed areas such as the face, ears, neck, and arms is essential. Spray and stick versions are available for easy application. Since sunscreen should be reapplied every two to three hours to maintain protection, these options are especially convenient during long hours on the road under the sun.

Protective Clothing

There are clothing items available with built-in UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) protection. These fabrics help shield the skin from excessive ultraviolet radiation while keeping the body cool. They are ideal for summer trips through hot regions.

Additionally, wearing gloves or a visor can provide extra protection. Choose breathable fabrics whenever possible. And remember to protect your eyes with polarized sunglasses, which help reduce glare and improve visibility on the road.

Window Tinting

One of the best investments for long-haul drivers is UV-blocking window tint. These films can reduce UV exposure by up to 99%, providing a much-needed barrier between you and the sun. Not only does this protect your skin, but it also helps keep your cab cooler, making those long interstate drives a little more comfortable.

Be sure to check your state regulations or your trucking company’s policies before installing window tint, as laws vary regarding the level of darkness permitted. As an alternative, you can use removable UV-blocking window screens.

Hydration and Routine Skin Checks

Staying hydrated is a fundamental part of skin care, as dehydrated skin is more vulnerable to damage. Keeping a large reusable water bottle in your cab and drinking regularly can help strengthen the skin’s natural protective barriers.

Finally, performing regular skin self-exams can help detect unusual moles, spots, or bumps early. Pay special attention to highly exposed areas such as the face, arms, and neck. If you notice any irregularities or changes in the size, shape, or color of moles or spots, consult a dermatologist.

Taking care of your health is also part of the journey.
