It was the longest presidential speech to lawmakers on record. He detailed his vision for his second term
President Donald Trump proclaimed that “the American Dream cannot be stopped” as he addressed a lively joint session of the US Congress for the first time since reclaiming the presidency.
In what became the longest presidential speech to lawmakers on record, he detailed his vision for his second term, with Republicans enthusiastically applauding a fast-paced six weeks that have significantly reshaped both domestic and foreign policy.
Democrats heckled Trump throughout his primetime address, and he responded in kind, engaging in verbal sparring.
The Republican leader has aggressively moved to reduce the federal workforce, tighten immigration controls, impose tariffs on major trading partners, and reevaluate the transatlantic alliance in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Key highlights:
Trump Foresees Challenges Ahead with Tariffs
Amid ongoing market fluctuations, Trump downplayed concerns over potential economic disruptions from the trade war he escalated this week, which includes a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, along with an additional 10% levy on Chinese goods.
However, unlike the enthusiastic responses to his other policies, many Republicans remained seated—a sign of division within the party over Trump’s tariff strategy.
“Tariffs are about making America wealthy again and restoring its greatness,” he stated.
“It’s already happening, and it will progress quickly. There may be some turbulence, but we’re prepared for that. It won’t be significant.”
Trump added that targeted tariffs tailored to specific US trading partners would take effect on April 2.
Earlier in the day, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told Fox Business that Trump could announce a trade agreement with Mexico and Canada as early as Wednesday.
A Potential Minerals Agreement with Ukraine Resurfaces
Trump revealed that he had received a “crucial letter” from Ukraine’s president earlier that day, which aligned with a message Volodymyr Zelensky had publicly posted on social media.
Zelensky stated he was now willing to work under Trump’s “strong leadership” to negotiate an end to the war and move toward lasting peace.
“I appreciate his letter,” Trump told lawmakers.
This overture came a day after Trump halted all military assistance to Ukraine, following a contentious Oval Office meeting last week in which the two leaders clashed in front of TV cameras. The disagreement led to the cancellation of a minerals agreement that would have allowed the US to benefit from a partnership involving Ukraine’s resources.
Trump had reportedly hoped to announce the deal’s completion during his congressional address, but it remained unresolved.
Greenland Remains a Target, Lesotho Does Not
Although much of his 99-minute speech focused on domestic issues, Trump’s broader global ambitions also came into sharper focus.
He reiterated his longstanding desire for the US to acquire Greenland, stating, “We will get it—one way or another.” He also vowed that his administration would “reassert control” over the Panama Canal.
Trump also criticized US foreign aid spending, listing Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, and Uganda as nations unfairly benefiting from American taxpayer money.
His most pointed remark concerned Lesotho, which he described as a country “most people have never even heard of,” yet it received $8 million to support LGBT rights.
Elon Musk Plays a Key Role in Government Reforms
Early in his speech, Trump acknowledged billionaire adviser Elon Musk, who watched from the gallery.
Musk leads the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) taskforce, which has been responsible for cutting tens of thousands of federal jobs, reducing foreign aid expenditures, and eliminating numerous government programs.
Dressed in a dark suit with a blue tie, the SpaceX and Tesla CEO stood to acknowledge the applause from the audience.
“Thank you, Elon,” said Trump, 78. “He’s working tirelessly. He didn’t have to do this.”
Musk’s cost-cutting measures have sparked backlash, including heated town hall meetings. Some of his directives to federal employees have even been overridden by members of Trump’s cabinet.
During the speech, Democratic lawmakers held up signs reading “Musk steals” and “False.”
The Doge taskforce claims to have saved $105 billion, but independent verification remains elusive. While receipts have been provided for $18.6 billion in savings, US media outlets have reported accounting discrepancies in the figures.

Democrats Protest Loudly
Within five minutes of Trump’s speech, Texas Representative Al Green was escorted out of the chamber by security after defying the House Speaker’s orders to cease heckling the president.
As Trump spoke, other Democrats held up signs declaring, “This is a lie.”
With Republicans controlling the White House, House of Representatives, and Senate, Democrats have struggled to unify their opposition and craft a compelling countermessage against Trump’s rapid policy shifts.
Many Democratic women arrived wearing pink pantsuits as a form of protest. Dozens walked out of the chamber mid-speech, with some donning shirts emblazoned with the word “Resist.”
“There’s absolutely nothing I can say that will satisfy them,” Trump remarked, appearing to relish the partisan friction.
Democratic leaders selected Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin—a first-term legislator from a key battleground state Trump won in November—to deliver the party’s official response.
Slotkin criticized Trump for what she called “an unprecedented giveaway to his billionaire allies” and cautioned that his policies “could lead us straight into a recession

Energy ndependence as a strategy to curb inflation
Trump reassured voters that he would tackle inflation head-on during his second term, stating that his main strategy would be to lower energy costs by significantly expanding domestic oil and gas drilling.
“We have more resources beneath our land than any other nation in the world, and now I have fully authorized the most talented team ever to extract them. The mission is simple: drill, baby, drill.”
The rising cost of eggs has been a major talking point in recent weeks, and Trump pointed fingers at his predecessor.
“Joe Biden allowed egg prices to spiral out of control—and we are working hard to bring them back down,” he asserted.
Egg prices surged after the Biden administration ordered the culling of millions of egg-laying hens last year due to a bird flu outbreak. Prices have remained high under Trump’s administration.
While inflation stood at 3% last month—significantly lower than its peak of 9.1% in 2022—only one-third of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of cost-of-living issues, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted on Tuesday.
