The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced a new edition of Operation Safe Driver Week, which will take place from July 13 to 19, 2025. This annual initiative brings together traffic enforcement authorities from Canada, Mexico, and the United States with the goal of enhancing road safety, with a special focus on the behavior of commercial and passenger vehicle drivers.
During this week, law enforcement officers will be focused on identifying and penalizing dangerous driving behaviors. Any driver engaging in unsafe actions may receive either a warning or a citation, depending on the severity of the offense. Active monitoring will take place on roads and highways throughout North America.
Operation Safe Driver Week: reckless driving
This year, the campaign will focus on reckless, careless, or dangerous driving. The CVSA has emphasized that such behavior endangers not only the driver responsible but also other road users and both public and private property. Driving without due attention or consideration for others is a form of negligence that can have serious or even fatal consequences.
Reckless driving, as defined by the CVSA, involves operating a vehicle without reasonable care, attention, or regard for other drivers or pedestrians. This includes actions such as speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Last year’s results highlight the scale of the problem. In 2024, during the same operation week, traffic officers issued a total of:
- 2,439 warnings
- 1,583 citations to commercial vehicle drivers
- 1,226 speeding tickets
- 354 warnings issued to drivers
- 554 citations for not wearing a seatbelt
Additionally, there were 158 warnings and 169 citations for improper use of mobile devices while driving. Authorities also reported 30 warnings and 49 penalties for possession, consumption, or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs—evidence of the ongoing presence of high-risk behaviors on the roads.
Strengthening road safety culture and promoting responsibility
It is worth noting that Operation Safe Driver Week is not solely focused on punishment. Authorities will also launch educational campaigns to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of maintaining a responsible and safe attitude behind the wheel. Through these actions, the CVSA aims to significantly reduce traffic accidents and save lives.
This initiative represents a joint effort between neighboring countries to strengthen road safety culture and promote responsibility among commercial vehicle drivers, who play a key role in ensuring highway safety.
