According to truck drivers' opinions in a survey by Overdrive, these are the states with the worst roads in the United States.

The digital platform Overdrive conducted a survey in early spring 2025 to gather truck drivers’ opinions about state Departments of Transportation and their management of infrastructure. The survey collected feedback on the current condition of highways, the most challenging routes for deliveries, and the availability of parking across the states.

Recently, the results of this survey were published in a report by Overdrive, featuring responses from independent drivers, small fleets, as well as drivers from large companies and carriers. The collected information provides a snapshot of the current state of U.S. infrastructure, according to the true road experts: truckers.

The states with the worst roads in the United States

More than 75% of all respondents reported traveling an average haul distance of over 450 miles, representing extensive familiarity with current U.S. routes. According to the truckers’ feedback, these are the states with the worst roads in the country:

  1. Indiana
  2. Louisiana
  3. Arizona
  4. California
  5. New Mexico
  6. New York
  7. Pennsylvania
  8. Illinois
  9. Michigan
  10. Colorado

Indiana ranked first by a wide margin, with 32% of Overdrive readers naming it the state with the worst road conditions. According to the report, this is largely due to poor maintenance of major freight corridors such as I-70, which was also selected by the vast majority of respondents as the worst route in the nation.

The state accounted for three of the ten worst highways within its borders when the results were broken down by roadway. “Honestly, any highway in Indiana could easily be named the worst,” one respondent noted in the report.

Overdrive reported that several states that once ranked near the bottom of its “Highway Report Card” have shown significant improvement over the past decade. In 2024, Louisiana reached the top spot on the list; however, this year it dropped one position to second place. Pennsylvania, meanwhile, fell from first place a few years ago to seventh. These changes reflect real progress in U.S. highway maintenance, though the work toward improvement is far from complete.

The worst individual routes in the United States

In addition to identifying the states with the worst road conditions, truckers also voted on the worst individual highways within those states. According to Overdrive’s research, these are the worst routes in the country:

  1. I-70 in Indiana
  2. I-40 in New Mexico
  3. I-40 in Arizona
  4. I-10 in Louisiana
  5. I-20 in Louisiana
  6. I-95 in New York
  7. I-5 in California
  8. I-80 in Indiana
  9. I-65 in Indiana
  10. I-70 in Colorado

The goal of this report is to encourage the trucking community to put pressure on state transportation departments, as such involvement can make a difference, as shown by the states that have improved or shifted in the rankings. Overdrive emphasizes that maintaining a constant flow of information not only supports reactive maintenance efforts but also promotes preventive and proactive actions.
