The companies that stand out on the list, while not necessarily the most lucrative, compensate handsomely for the work performed.
The list covers options for all types of drivers. The criterion for defining the list focuses on fair compensation for work performed, including bonuses for truck overnights or other supplemental pay programs. The salary estimates presented are approximate and subject to change.

Old Dominion Freight Line
Based in Thomasville, North Carolina, it is recognized for its outstanding punctuality and low claims rate in the transportation industry. The company offers significant benefits, safety bonuses and tuition reimbursement programs for qualified and new drivers. Local drivers earn approximately $78,000 annually, line drivers average $100,000 per year, and team drivers have a median salary of $202,000 per year.
Mercer Transportation
This Louisville, Kentucky-based company hauls specialized freight, including Department of Defense (DOD) cargo. Most drivers working for Mercer report incomes well into six figures. Owner-operators are estimated to earn an average of over $200,000 annually.

Sysco Foods
Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Sysco Foods operates as a private fleet transporting exclusively their products. Due to the nature of private fleets, Sysco Foods drivers typically receive highly competitive salaries in the transportation industry. Driving jobs in these fleets are highly sought after, offering routes ranging from local to transcontinental. On average, a typical Sysco driver earns around $80,000 per year.
Walmart
As a private fleet, Walmart is known for offering competitive salaries and fully compensating their drivers’ time. The company provides a wide range of driving options including hourly positions, regional routes, and over-the-road (OTR) jobs. Long-term drivers are rewarded with salary increases and stable schedules. For example, a 20-year veteran can earn up to $150,000 annually working Monday to Friday, nine to five. New drivers can earn up to $110,000 in their first year, though longevity with the company is often highly beneficial in the long term.
