Freightliner unveiled the fifth generation of the Cascadia on the morning of Tuesday, October 15. The new version is a redesign of the renowned Class 8 highway truck. The model was introduced at the American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference and Exhibition, marking the first update in five years, aimed at optimizing efficiency and safety in response to market demands.

Serial production of the new Cascadia generation will begin in mid-2025, with the order book opening in late 2024, announced Greg Treinen, Vice President of Highway Market Development at Daimler Truck North America (DTNA), during a pre-launch event in Michigan.

Improvements in power and safety

The redesigned Cascadia will feature enhancements primarily in power and safety. It was reported that this model will initially offer Detroit DD13 and DD15 engines, with up to 505 HP and 1,850 lb-ft of torque. By 2026, Cummins X15 and X15N (diesel and natural gas) engines will be available, with power outputs ranging from 400 to 605 HP and torque from 1,450 to 2,050 lb-ft. Additionally, the redesign includes a revamped grille, new intelligent LED headlights, and an improved A-pillar deflector to optimize fuel efficiency.

In terms of safety, the features have been significantly expanded with the enhanced Detroit Assurance system, which includes new brake technology, four short-range radar sensors, and an upgraded long-range radar. The new Cascadia model features an Active Brake Assist 6 system, capable of automatically braking in emergency situations, even when detecting pedestrians. Furthermore, Lane Keep Assist 2 aids in lane changes and can bring the truck to a stop if the driver fails to respond in time, enhancing highway safety.

New features and advanced technology

The Cascadia’s Intelligent Brake Control System (IBCS) now offers brake-by-wire technology combined with pneumatic support, utilizing wheel speed sensors and a chassis-mounted electronic control unit. The IBCS offers two new functions:

  • Comfort braking: This feature distributes braking force, manages brake pad wear, and monitors performance.
  • Resistance braking: It combines the engine retarder and service brakes when the pedal is applied, helping to further extend brake life.

It also includes an automatic electronic parking brake and a remote locking function to increase uptime. To improve visibility, the MirrorCam system, with hydrophobic coatings and infrared technology, comes factory-installed.

Freightliner closely collaborated with its customers during the development of this new version, ensuring that the innovations address their needs and improve both safety and profitability in transportation operations. These redesigns reflect the rapid advancements in the trucking industry and the requirements that manufacturers must meet.
