Waiting for your tax refund? The IRS makes it easy to track your status online or via mobile with their “Where’s My Refund?” tool. Here’s how it works, what you’ll need, and when you should expect an update.
Use This Tool to Check Your Refund
You can track the status of your federal tax refund using the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” online tool or the IRS2Go mobile app. The IRS updates refund information once per day, usually overnight. Keep in mind that the system is unavailable daily between 4–5 a.m. Eastern Time for updates.
When Will My Refund Status Be Available?
Your refund status will appear:
⏱️ 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return
⏱️ 3 to 4 days after e-filing a prior-year return
📬 4 weeks after mailing a paper return
What You’ll Need
To check your refund status, be ready with:
🔢 Your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
📄 Your filing status (e.g., Single, Married Filing Jointly)
💲 The exact refund amount from your return
If you prefer mobile, download and use the IRS2Go app for fast and secure access.

Understanding Your Refund Status
The tool will display one of three statuses:
Return Received – The IRS received your return and is processing it.
Refund Approved – Your refund has been approved and is being prepared.
Refund Sent – Your refund has been sent to your bank or via mail.
🏦 Direct deposit may take up to 5 days
📬 Paper checks can take several weeks

Before You File Again
Filing the same tax return again won’t speed things up — it may actually cause delays. You should only resubmit your return electronically if:
You’re expecting a refund
You originally filed a paper return more than 6 months ago
The IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool does not show it was received
When to Contact the IRS
Only call the IRS about your refund if the “Where’s My Refund?” tool instructs you to do so.
Need help? Visit the official IRS page for contact numbers and help options.
If Your Refund is Delayed
Delays can happen if your return needs:
Corrections
Additional review
In such cases, the IRS will send you a letter requesting further information.
