Inspections in Canada, Mexico and the U.S., resulted in 9,345 vehicles being out of service.
The International Roadcheck took place from May 14 to 16, with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) publishing the results. A total of 48,761 inspections were conducted in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S., resulting in 9,345 vehicles being placed out of service and a total of 13,567 violations.
This year’s inspection results show a significant increase in OOS violations for defective service brakes, totaling 3,387, making it the primary issue in North America. Jeremy Disbrow, a CVSA inspection specialist, explained that this increase is due to a reclassification of violation codes to improve data collection. This adjustment in classification helps better understand safety issues in commercial vehicles.

2024 International Roadcheck results: increase in out-of-service vehicle rates
Although the number of out-of-service (OOS) vehicles may seem concerning, both the total number of OOS vehicles and violations have decreased compared to last year’s inspection. However, the overall OOS rate rose from 19.3% to 23%.
In 2024, the main focus was on tractor protection systems (TPS), but the most common violations leading to OOS vehicles were for defective service brakes and tires. Inspectors also found 564 violations related to TPS, although not all resulted in an OOS vehicle.
Additionally, there were 2,486 violations for other brake issues, 1,569 for defective lights, and 1,303 for load securement. In total, brake and tire violations accounted for 45.8% of all defective service violations in North America. On a positive note, 17,395 inspected units, including trailers and buses, had no critical violations and received a CVSA sticker.

Top out-of-service violations in North America
- Defective Service Brakes – 25%
- Tires – 20.8%
- Other Brake Violations – 18.3%
- Lights – 11.6%
- Load Securement – 9.6%
Top out-of-service violations in the United States
- Faulty service brakes – 26.5%
- Tires – 22.1%
- Other Brake Violations – 16.4%
- Lights – 12% Load securement – 8.8% Load restraint – 8.8%
- Cargo securement – 8.8%

The CVSA reported that during the three days, 48,761 inspections were conducted in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, representing a decrease of nearly 18% compared to last year’s 59,429. Each year, the International Roadcheck focuses on a specific area; in 2024, the emphasis was on tractor protection systems, including the tractor protection valve, trailer supply valve, and check valve. The CVSA will share more results soon.
