The White House Government Efficiency Department, known as DOGE, aims to eradicate fraud, waste, and abuse of public funds.
President Donald Trump, on his first day in office, signed an executive order to create the White House Government Efficiency Department, known as DOGE. Led by billionaire and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk, who was appointed as a “special government employee,“ this task force aims to eradicate fraud, waste, and abuse of public funds.
Since its establishment, DOGE claims to have saved over one billion dollars by canceling contracts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, among other expenses. However, this new department has faced criticism, lawsuits, and complaints from Democratic lawmakers and consumer advocates. DOGE has gained access to the Department of the Treasury’s payment system, which stores personal information about Americans, raising concerns about privacy.

What is DOGE?
The White House Government Efficiency Department, known as DOGE—not only for its acronym but also as a nod to Elon Musk’s support of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, created in 2021—is a new branch of government established by President Trump through an executive order. This department replaced the existing White House office called the U.S. Digital Service.
According to social media posts by DOGE and Musk, the task force’s goal is to identify federal contracts and spending related to issues that do not align with President Trump’s policies, such as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and foreign aid.
Under Trump’s executive order, it was established that each agency, such as the Department of Labor or the Department of the Treasury, would have a DOGE team of at least four employees, which could include special officials. Each team was to be composed of a team leader, an engineer, a human resources specialist, and a lawyer. These teams would be responsible for advising agencies “on implementing the President’s DOGE Agenda,“ according to the executive order.
The group has acted swiftly toward its goal, eliminating agencies and initiatives deemed as wasteful and unnecessary for the U.S. government. Some of these include:

Department of Education
Trump’s intention to eliminate the Department of Education (DOE) has been clear. Calling it a scam, Trump argues that education should be managed at the state and local levels. On February 12, DOGE announced the cancellation of several DOE contracts and the termination of 89 contracts from the department. While the department’s future remains uncertain, Trump has expressed his desire for Linda McMahon, his nominee for Secretary of Education, to lose her position.
DEIA Initiatives (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility)
On January 31, DOGE announced it had rescinded 104 public contracts related to DEIA programs and initiatives. These cuts affected 30 agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Office of Personnel Management, the Environmental Protection Agency, and many others. These closures generated savings of over one billion dollars.
U.S. Agency for International Development
Elon Musk has been working to shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which funds global humanitarian efforts. However, a federal judge partially blocked the closure of USAID, stating that Congressional approval was required. Experts warn that a shutdown would strengthen China’s influence on the global stage.

Federal Aviation Administration
Following the deadly American Airlines crash in Washington DC in January, Musk announced he would address the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Through his platform X, Musk claimed that the FAA’s aircraft safety notification system had failed for several hours, and that Trump approved the DOGE team to work on rapid improvements to the air traffic control system.
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
Musk has repeatedly called for the elimination of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), created in 2011 to protect Americans from abusive financial practices. Trump’s Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, ordered the agency to halt most of its operations and cease its public communications. The CFPB closed its Washington DC headquarters and suspended its employees’ work, sending layoff notices to dozens of employees.
Other administrations and agencies are also under scrutiny by DOGE, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). While plans with many of these agencies are still under development, both Trump and Musk have made it clear that their mission is to reduce federal spending. Although the results may not be immediate, they are expected to have a significant impact on the nation.
