The National Truck and Step Van Driving Championship (NTDC) returns this year from August 20 to 23. With more than 400 drivers qualified for the national precision driving competition, the NTDC will take place at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The qualified drivers will be evaluated by a panel of experts on their skills, knowledge of industry regulations, and ability to maneuver trucks through a driving course.
The NTDC will feature eight competitive categories to assess the participating drivers. These include: straight truck, 3-axle, 4-axle, 5-axle, sleeper berth, tanker, twin trailers, and flatbed. In addition to truck driving, the event also includes the National Step Van Driving Championship.
To qualify, drivers must maintain an accident-free record for the entire year and must first compete at the regional level. Winners at the NTDC are awarded first, second, and third place titles, and also compete for several special awards: the Professional Excellence Award, Vehicle Condition Award, Rookie of the Year Award, and the highest honor: the Grand Champion Award.
2025 National Truck and Step Van Driving Championship
The event recognizes the outstanding safety achievements of the country’s most skilled commercial drivers. In addition, top traffic enforcement specialists from across the nation will gather at the Minneapolis Convention Center from August 19 to 23 to participate in the National Championship for Elite Safety Inspectors.
This tournament, held alongside the NTDC, is the North American Inspectors Championship (NAIC), organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). It will bring together 45 traffic enforcement experts from the United States and Canada, who will be tested on their knowledge of commercial motor vehicle rules and regulations.
This year, competitors will receive advanced training in topics such as mobile driver’s licenses, electronic parking brake systems, light-duty vehicle inspections, and regulations regarding hazardous materials and dangerous goods, among others.
NTDC: Making History with 15 Women Competitors
In addition to promoting safe and responsible driving, the NTDC will make history this year with the participation of 15 women— the highest number ever recorded in the competition’s history. Several of them expressed their excitement about being part of this edition after excelling in regional competitions.
Among them is Joyce Bain of FedEx Freight, who took first place in the five-axle category at the Maryland Truck Driving Championship held in June. Also returning this year is Ina Daly of XPO Arizona, a former captain of America’s Road Team and the only woman to ever win a national NTDC title (tanker truck category, 2013). She will be competing in the flatbed division this year.
The NTDC is an event that celebrates the skill and dedication of the men and women in the trucking industry. The record number of women participating this year not only highlights their growing presence in the sector, but also underscores the need to continue creating opportunities for greater inclusion and representation in the industry.
