Twenty-five percent of truckers remain very positive about President Donald Trump's policies.

During Donald Trump’s political campaign, one of the groups that supported him the most were truckers. However, despite maintaining their support and continuing to back Trump as president, a recent FleetOwner survey revealed that members of the road transport industry have changed their opinions in the early weeks of the new administration.

Although the road transport sector showed general support for Trump’s return to the White House, the majority of respondents expressed negative feelings toward his policies. According to FleetOwner, most industry members considered the first weeks of his return to office to be very negative or somewhat negative. Still, general support remains strong.

What do truckers think? Mixed reactions to Donald Trump’s policies

It is clear that the increase in tariffs is one of the policies that has generated the most discussion in the road transport industry and represents one of the main concerns for the current supply chain. In this context, FleetOwner interviewed nearly 300 people from the transport sector to reflect their opinions on Trump’s second term. The survey was conducted between March 6 and March 17, and the results were as follows:

  • 39% very negative
  • 16% somewhat negative
  • 25% very positive
  • 9% somewhat positive
  • 10% neutral

The main issues that prompted these responses focused on tariffs, emissions regulations, and fuel costs. However, despite the prevailing discontent, only 39% of respondents expressed disagreement, meaning that support remains solid even in the face of setbacks.

What do truckers think about the increase in tariffs?

The issue that appeared most frequently in this survey was tariffs, due to the potential repercussions they could have on the road transport sector, especially in cross-border logistics, merchandise recovery, and other areas.

Respondents characterized these measures as a loss of profits and time, reflecting frustrations with the imposition of tariffs by Trump. However, not all responses on this topic were overwhelmingly negative. Some participants expressed approval, stating that the tariffs would lead to a more favorable economic outlook for the U.S. “My personal belief is that these tariffs are tools to shake up the ‘business as usual’ mindset and negotiate for a better U.S.,” said a truck manufacturer.

What do truckers think about emissions regulations and fuel costs?

Emissions regulations were also a recurring topic in the survey responses. In general, the road transport industry appears more positive about potential changes to emissions regulations under Trump than about the tariffs. Some respondents, such as a fleet manager, believe that cleaning up California’s CARB standards is necessary, while others, such as a fleet executive, are calling for improvements on a more realistic timeline for emissions.

However, some see changes to emissions as a positive aspect but criticize other Trump policies. A truck distributor expressed support for the elimination of emissions mandates but warned that foreign policies and tariffs could slow down innovation and efficiency in the industry, affecting global competitiveness.

Lastly, fuel prices have become another key issue for the industry. The survey revealed widespread concerns about how Trump’s policies are affecting fuel prices.

While the road transport industry continues to largely support President Donald Trump, his recent decisions have led to mixed opinions and legitimate concerns about the sector’s future. Truckers conclude that all they can do is wait for the measures to be adjusted so that the year can meet the goals the industry needs to achieve.
