Volvo’s FH Electric pioneering the future of sustainable trucking

Volvo Trucks’ FH Electric heavy truck was honored with the prestigious title of “International Truck of the Year for 2024” at a ceremony held during the Solutrans Transport Show in Lyon, France. This annual recognition is awarded to a truck introduced to the market in the past 12 months that has made the most significant contribution to road transport efficiency, according to the organization.

Gianenrico Griffini, President of the International Truck of the Year, shared in a press release that with the introduction of the FH Electric, Volvo Trucks has delivered a range of state-of-the-art battery electric vehicles suitable for transport operations. “It is evidence that the energy transition is gaining momentum even in the challenging current business environment,” commented Griffini.

Production of the Volvo FH Electric began in 2022 at the Volvo facilities in Gothenburg, Sweden, and production in Ghent, Belgium, started this year. This marks the fourth time that Volvo’s FH model has won the Truck of the Year award. The FH is one of the most successful models in the sector, with nearly 1.4 million trucks sold worldwide.

The FH Electric can operate with a total weight of 48.5 tons. Volvo Trucks pioneered the mass production of electric trucks in 2019 and currently offers a comprehensive range of six electric trucks designed for various transport tasks. With a 49% market share in heavy electric trucks in Europe, the company introduced its complete electric lineup in the South African market in June of this year.

Recently, Volvo Trucks achieved a milestone by introducing eight heavy electric trucks in the Latin American market, marking the brand’s first sales of emission-free trucks in the region. This expansion is a crucial step in Volvo’s global mission to lead the electrification of transportation. With a presence on six continents and in 45 countries, the company is at the forefront of the heavy transport revolution.

Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, accepted the award on behalf of the company and expressed gratitude, noting that it is the first time in history that the transport industry has chosen an electric vehicle as “Truck of the Year.” Alm emphasized that the FH Electric represents a new era in road transport, and the award clearly reflects that the transition to emission-free transport is increasingly imminent. He thanked the entire team that contributed to the production and distribution of the FH Electric.

This marks a significant milestone in the trucking industry, emphasizing the accelerating shift toward sustainable transportation. The recognition underscores the global acceptance and impact of electric trucks, with Volvo’s commitment to introducing these vehicles across continents signaling a broader industry acknowledgment of the urgency to reduce emissions.

The FH Electric’s versatility and recognition as a heavy-duty performer indicate the growing viability of electric trucks for diverse transport operations. This accolade not only celebrates technological advancements but also symbolizes a transformative era in which electric vehicles are pivotal in steering the trucking industry towards a cleaner and more environmentally responsible future.
